Octopuses can be found in all of the world's oceans. The wide range of habitats they occupy include coral and rocky reefs; beds of sea grass, sand or algae and now even your bathroom or guest toilet. But this one is of course a very special species, hand-painted in matt white biscuit porcelain.
PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE is the name given to the technique in which liquid porcelain is used to paint on the unfired shards. Even the smallest details, such as the suction cups on the tentacles, can be depicted using the fine squirrel hair brushes. The more layers the painters apply, the higher and denser the relief becomes and, depending on the incidence of light, it appears stronger or weaker.
