The painter, architect and sculptor Hermann Gradl designed the BELLE EPOQUE fish service in the first year he worked for the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg. Presented in 1900 at the Paris World Exhibition and awarded a "Grand Prix", it is one of the most successful examples of Art Nouveau in Munich, to which its name refers. The fish platter, saucière and potato bowl as well as the 16 plates - later expanded to a service for 18 people - all feature various fish motifs in the Art Noveau style. Traditionally the contours of the fish are printed outlines transfered to tissue paper from a copper printing plate, from which they are transferred to the plates and then hand painted in detail. In the stylized depiction of aquatic plants, the elegant shape merges the decor with the cutout in the pattern and harmoniously frames the piece. Five decor firings are necessary to allow the artistic onglaze painting to blossom.
