ROLF SACHS "BERÜHRUNG"
ROLF SACHS' "BEÜHRUNG" CHANDELIER COLLECTION AIMS TO MOVE PEOPLE. THE UNIQUE PIECES FOR NYMPHENBURG PUT FLAWS IN THE RIGHT LIGHT.
Perfection, purity and detail: this is the ethos with which the master workshops at Porzellan Manufaktur have been working for 275 years. And then along comes Rolf Sachs - artist, designer, jack-of-all-trades - and overturns it all with an approach that strikes a balance between fair and laissez-faire. In his new creation for Nymphenburg, porcelain is kneaded with verve, moulded with intuition and courage, bent and pressed with spontaneity. An affront? A declaration of love! "Perfect often seems a little sterile. I've always loved flaws more," explains the 68-year-old.
With the candlesticks in the "Berührung" series, the manufactory and material are breaking new ground. The porcelain abandons its usual transparency and delicacy and becomes unconventional, poetic unique pieces with cracks, fingerprints and seemingly random shapes: small and large, high and low, made of pure white bisque porcelain or with coloured glazed sections.
The limited-edition collection will be available from 24 October 2023.
Rolf Sachs experiences working with the porcelain mass, which otherwise follows fixed processes in the manufactory - moulding, turning, embossing, painting, firing - in a more spontaneous way. Nevertheless, even after many years of collaboration with Haus Nymphenburg, it remains something special for the artist to feel the fine material with his hands, to shape it and to engage with it, and even more: to engage with it with all his senses and to create an emotional oeuvre from decorative art. Rolf Sachs also expects viewers to engage holistically with expectations and clichés. "Berührung" is a deliberate break with today's perfectionism as a general standard and is intended to encourage people to recognise imperfections... and to celebrate them. For the artist, his work has always centred on an examination of people: "The more eccentric we are, the more we show of our character," Sachs believes and calls on us to stop hiding our flaws, but to live with them and even enjoy them.
In keeping with the tradition of Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, the "Beührung" centrepiece on the table encourages discussion and invites you to rediscover the soul of porcelain.
